What is a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)?
TUE is the authorization by the Therapeutic Use Exemptions Committee (TUEC) to take or use medical treatment for therapeutic purposes with medications containing active ingredients included in the current WADA Prohibited List.
To whom should a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) application be submitted?

The International Athlete must submit the TUE Application to the Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee (TUEC) of the relevant International Federation.
When should an application for a Therapeutic Exemption (TUE) be submitted?
An application for TUE must be submitted, whenever possible, 30 days before participating in sport competitions.
What should an Athlete do if in need of assuming medications in an emergency condition?
TUE application should be submitted to the TUEC of NADO Italia as soon as possible after administering the medications.
If the Athlete needs to take a medication, how can the Athlete know if the substance is prohibited or not?

How does the Athlete know if a substance is only prohibited In Competition or Out of Competition?

What are the prohibited routes of administration for substances included in Section S9 Glucocorticosteroids on the WADA’s List for which a TUE application must be submitted?
The following routes of administration are prohibited In Competition: oral, intramuscular, intravenous and rectal. The Athlete may not take part in competitive sports during and in the hours/days following the therapy (in view of the plasma half-life but also the biological half-life of the active substance) -Art. 4.2b International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions

Please Note: as of January 1st (2022), all glucocorticosteroid-based injection routes (i.e. periarticular, intrarticular, peritendinous, intratendinous, epidural, intrathecal, intrabursal, intralesional, intradermal and subcutaneous) are prohibited.
When an Athlete has more than one pathology, how many TUE applications must be submitted?
Each application for TUE must be accompanied by a diagnosis and documentation.
What is the expiry date of a TUE?
The TUE period may correspond to the period of the therapy and, in any event, not go beyond the date of validity of the medical certificate for competitive sporting activity.
